Heart attack is one of the major killer disease nowadays. More and more research and reports tell us that one of the major cause for these heart diseases is high cholesterol level of those patients.

What is cholesterol and why we get excess of cholesterol in our blood stream?

Cholesterol is one type of lipoprotein, which is like a waxy substance produced by liver. There are mainly 3 types of cholesterol. HDL (high density lipoprotein) and LDL (low density lipoprotein) cholesterol and tryglicerides cholesterol. However, we obtain cholesterol not only from our liver but also from our food sources, especially animal based foods.

Why we need cholesterol and what is the effect of excess of LDL cholesterol?

LDL Cholesterol is transported by arteries into our cells of various organs as our body need it for metabolism or repairing of tissues. While HDL cholesterol is used to transport excess of LDL cholesterol back to liver for disposal. However, when our intake of LDL cholesterol from foods are too much, we will have extra cholesterol in our arteries and did not transported back to liver. Then, the cholesterol will deposit in our blood stream and causing blockage in the blood stream. This will reduce oxygens, nutrients, etc that brought by our blood to our heart. This thickening of walls in the arteries due to cholesterol deposit is called atherosclerosis. This leads to various types of heart disease.
